Previously on Drag Race: The queens got all up in their political geesh. Jaida Essence Hall emerged as a new frontrunner. Gigi Goode continued to stumble. And Widow Von’Du was sent home by Jackie Cox‘s beautiful performance.

Despite her amazing lip-sync just now, Miss Jackie is feeling a little nervous. As the queens go over their track records, it becomes clear that Jackie is the only queen in the competition right now who hasn’t been doing so hot lately. Even Heidi N Closet and Crystal Methyd, who don’t have the multiple wins Jaida and Gigi do, have been on a streak of great performances lately.

She betta put that hijab to werk with the quickness.

This week is the makeover challenge! But there’s a twist. The subjects of this season’s makeover are unwitting Drag Race superfans who had no idea this was gonna happen!

Girls1.png

“Breathe, breathe, breathe…”

As last week’s challenge winner, Jaida Essence Hall gets to assign the roles. Gigi Goode worries Jaida is going to use this as an opportunity to pull a Showgirls and take the others down with bad pairings. But being the epitome of class and elegance, Jaida pairs the queens up with girls she thinks will have a similar personality.

Award-winning casting director realness.

The queens sit down with their girls to get to know them and get an idea of what they could put together. Heidi N Closet’s girl, Nicole, has a tough history of being bullied and put down throughout her life for her weight. She feels uncomfortable in her own skin and has been too afraid to show her legs for 20-something years.

Heidi1.png

Oh no!

Heidi sets out on an even more important quest than winning this challenge: she wants to make Nicole feel beautiful and confident again. That’s a winner right there.

Crystal Methyd’s superfan Grace is similar to her in that she struggles with a lot of anxiety. But Grace has a great technique to fight off demons and nervousness: the superhero pose! Stand up straight, put your fists on your hips, puff up your chest, and breathe. It’s actually scientifically proven to help with confidence! Something about boosting hormone production.

DO try this at home!

Heidi’s going for a disco theme with her makeover, and as RuPaul goes around the werk room to see what everyone’s up to, Jackie Cox says she plans on doing a disco lewk for her makeover.

Heidi2.png

Beyon-say what?

It’s on, hennie. Disco style. And Jackie’s dance partner Tiffany has a trick or two up her sleeve.

Jackie-Tiffany1.png

Oooooo bitch.

During rehearsal, the queens get to see what their makeover partners can do. Jackie got lucky with Miss Tiffany, but a lot of the other queens are dealing with women who don’t get to prance around and do the splits in 9-inch heels very often. Or ever. Jaida Essence Hall picked her partner Bethany because she was attracted to her energy, but she’s realizing the poor gal can’t walk in heels.

Jaida2.png

The struggle is real.

The next day, the queens start to finally get their ladies up in drags. Bethany asks Jaida about her boyfriend. Jaida gushes about how her man is always there for her when things get difficult… and tears up. It’s a rare occasion for Jaida, who’s usually great at maintaining a solid facade. But Bethany’s warmth helps Jaida open herself up to the feels. It’s a beautiful moment.

Growth!

Crystal Methyd’s not going the traditional route with this challenge––not that she ever does. She’s planning on bringing her full wacky Methyd fantasy to this runway… and that involves painting her girl all yellow.

Choices.

Ru’s Lewk Ruview:

The hair is very safe and not super interesting, but that gown. My god, that gown. It is everything. Toot.

Let’s get to these runway presentations!

Heidi-Nicole1.png

Heidi N Closet has dolled up Nicole into Honey Almighty. I’m so happy for Nicole that she’s feeling brave enough to be serving legs on the menu. It’s a beautiful moment for her. But honestly? Heidi’s garment looks runway-ready and Honey’s looks like she got it at Wet Seal. Tatianna found dead.

Jackie-Tiffany3.png

Jackie Cox and Tiffany a.k.a. Lil’ Snacky Cox (talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular) went a step further than Heidi with the disco theme. They’ve got sparkles, they’re giving me Bee Gees, there’s a dance routine, it’s cute. But like with Heidi’s makeover, Jackie looks WAY better than Lil’ Snacky, which isn’t great.

Jaida-Bethany1.png

Now here’s a makeover that feels even. Jaida Essence Hall looks like her usual flawless self, but awkward Bethany has been transformed into a thing of beauty as Jazz Essence Hall. She is absolutely gorgeous, and she’s able to walk in those high heels and serve confidence and elegance. And as always with Jaida, the queen made her own outfits. Brava.

Crystal-Grace2.png

Wow. Just wow. Crystal Methyd has done it again. Grace is now Opal Methyd and one half of this incredible Bert and Ernie fantasy that Crystal has concocted for the judges. It’s bold but it really works, and Opal is such a sport for playing along wholeheartedly. It do take nerve.

Gigi-Shea1.png

Gigi Goode’s superfan Shea is now Bebe Bad (clever). The hair and makeup are perfect, the presentation is fun and cute, and this symmetry with their outfits is delicious. But it’s a very safe look––there’s not a whole lot of creativity here. I feel like Gigi could’ve done more.

One more treat before we move on: the made-up superfans need to lip-sync for their lives! Amazing. The top two All Stars of the week are…

Tiffany1.png

Lil’ Snacky Cox, who knows all the moves! She vogues, she does a split, she is serving face––winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Grace1.png

… And Opal Methyd, who uses her lewk to her full advantage and completely embodies the Crystal Methyd attitude. She does a fantastic job.

In the Untucked lounge, Jackie and Lil’ Snacky have a moment. Lil’ Snacky feels like she let Jackie down and is the reason she’s in the bottom. Jackie keeps her shit together beautifully and comforts Lil’ Snacky, telling her she did an amazing job and that Jackie will be using Snacky’s positive energy to kill that lip-sync.

Jackie2.png

She’s beauty and she’s grace.

Back on the main stage, Jaida Essence Hall wins the challenge!

Jaida4.png

YES. YES. YES.

Heidi N Closet and Jackie Cox are in the bottom two, and are lip-syncing to a song I’d never heard before but am absolutely in love with, Alex Newell‘s “Kill the Lights.”

Heidi3.png

Heidi is living her disco Jantasy. The super long sleeves look like they would cause a likely wardrobe malfunction, but Heidi handles them beautifully, flipping them around and creating pure magic with her garment.

Jackie3.png

Meanwhile, Jackie has gone full-tilt into comedy with this slapstick-y stalker act she’s playing. It’s hilarious and so well-done. She really serves physical comedy throughout and is incredibly entertaining.

Heidi-Jackie1

Near the end, the two of them embrace and do a bit together. It’s beautiful and adorable and so fun. Pure joy.

Heidi gets a “shantay, you stay.”

Heidi4.png

Yessss. But also poor Jackie!

But wait… it’s not over. Jackie gets to stay too!!

Jackie4.png

MY HEART!

It’s a double shantay, bitch!! And so well-deserved. That was a wonderful lip-sync in a season of rather lackluster ones, and a beautiful surprise.

I bring the run-downs!

Heidi N Closet – Heidi has lip-synced for her life three times now and has slayed her way to another day every time. It seems like we have a new lip-sync assassin on our hands! That, and her infectious joy are all the more reason to keep her around as long as possible. Can she make it to the top? We’ll see!

Jackie Cox – I keep thinking Jackie has seen her last week and she keeps surprising me. She’s an incredible lip-sync performer and brings such an unbridled energy to the stage. I honestly didn’t think she had it in her, but now I can’t wait to see her perform live some day, when the world is back to normal. Will her magic merkin make that happen faster?

Jaida Essence Hall – Jaida emerged as a frontrunner last week, and now, with a third win under her belt, she’s front and center in the race for that crown. She played it safe earlier in the season, when she didn’t need to stand out as much, but now that there’s a magnifying glass on every girl, Jaida is proving she is irreproachably perfect. And I’m at peace with that.

Crystal Methyd – Poor Crystal’s come THIS close to winning the last four challenges, which is a bit frustrating. But it’s still wonderful to see her fully owning her weird side while continually slaying the runway. She’s such a character.

Gigi Goode – Miss Goode hasn’t been doing too Goode lately (not sorry in the slightest). She started the season off with such a bang and now she’s been kind of flatlining. It’s really shocking, as Season 12 really felt like the Gigi show just a few weeks ago. She still has a very good chance at winning the season, but at the very least, these recent challenges have made the season a lot more unpredictable, which is absolutely a good thing. No one likes an obvious winner edit.

That’s all for this weeks, hens! Keep tuning in for some more recap goodness!
